What support does the helpline offer ?

When your partner or relative goes to prison it can be a very difficult time...
We can help and support you with any questions or concerns you may have including:

  • If you are worried about how you are coping
  • What you need to know about visiting the prison
  • Who to talk to at prison
  • Advice on claiming travel expenses
  • Any concern about home leave or your relative's release
  • If you are concerned about how your relative is coping
  • Any worries about the children
  • Putting you in touch with your local services
  • ... or do you just need someone to talk to ?

The Scottish Prisoners' Families Helpline

An independent support service for families and friends affected by imprisonment.

  • Lines open Monday to Friday 1pm to 5pm.
  • If we are unable to answer your call then please leave a message. We will return your call as soon as possible and will only say who we are if it is you who answers the telephone. We will not leave a message with another person.
  • If you prefer you can e-mail us using the Contact Facility.
  • We are also able to send you written information on a range of issues.

 

Can I get help with the cost of prison visits?

If you would like help in claiming your travel expenses for prison visits, you should visit the Assisted Prison Visits Unit (APVU) website for information.

You can e-mail APVU for advice at assisted.prison.visits@hmps.gsi.gov.uk or telephone on 0845 300 1423 (Mon to Fri 10:15-11:45 & 14:15-15:45).
