Research shows that prisoners are up to six times less likely to reoffend if they maintain family contact during imprisonment. Closer relationships often benefit prisoners’ families as well, who tend to be the ‘forgotten victims’ of incarceration, having distinctive needs of their own. Approximately 27,000 children are separated from an imprisoned parent each year in Scotland. This means that about twice as many children each year experience a parent’s imprisonment than a parent’s divorce.
