Health Inequalities in Families of Prisoners

We are pleased to announce that the full report from Dr Liz Brutus on the impact of family support work from a health perspective is now available on our website.

A tool to tackle health inequalities in the families of people in prison? Evaluating the Families Outside Family Support Worker role from a health perspective

In 2011, during a three month secondment, Families Outside hosted Dr Liz Brutus from NHS Lothian for her Certificate in Public Health.  In that time, Dr Brutus carried out a research project on behalf of Families Outside looking into the health inequalities in the families of people in prison and the impact of family support work on this.  The findings were highlighted in In Brief 6: Prisoners’ Families: The Value of Family Support Work, published in November 2011.  The full report, entitled “A tool to tackle health inequalities in the families of people in prison?  Evaluating the Families Outside Family Support Worker role from a health perspective”, gives a full account of this research as well as recommendations.

Families Outside would like to thank Dr Brutus for all the hard work that went into the completion of this report and Mr Phil Mackie for his comments and guidance.  We commend the report to you.
