HMP Dumfries Family Day
The recent good weather has reminded us here at Families Outside of a Family Day held on 18 May outdoors at HMP Dumfries when the weather was more macs and wellies than shorts and t-shirts. Regardless of this slight setback, Dumfries swam on through what turned out to be a fabulous and enjoyable family day for the near fifty people taking part.
With a big pink marquee and prison staff in t-shirts (macs cast to the wind – a very strong wind), the kids had a brilliant time, taking part in fun activities arranged by the SPPA (Scottish Pre-School Playgroup Association) such as face painting and all sorts of games. The fab Belgian biccies also went down a treat – the perfect bite before our very own Family Support Worker drove home proudly with her face still painted (though that could have just been her make-up).
Well done, not only to the staff and other organisations that took part, but also to the would-be Alan Rough. High praise indeed to this trooper who stood between the posts in the “beat the goalie” competition. As children took pot-shots at him under safe cover from the downpour, he stood strong, ankle deep in a large goal mouth puddle as shots “rained down on him”. A brilliant event that allowed families to just feel ‘normal’ once again.
More please. Oh, there is more..as Dumfries host another family event in the autumn!
