Mothers of Bedford

Women are the fastest growing population in today’s U.S. prisons and 80 percent of those women are mothers of school-aged children. This is an alarming figure and one that piqued the interest of Jenifer McShane, who after much research, decided to direct the documentary, “Mothers of Bedford.”  The film examines the question: Is it possible to become a better mother while serving time in a maximum security prison? “Mothers of Bedford” tries to answer this question through the stories of five women who are incarcerated in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County.

Excellent film!  Families Outside has arranged a special screening of it (UK premier) in Glasgow (Centre For Contemporary Arts) on the 5 June and Edinburgh (Edinburgh Filmhouse) on the 6 June from 6.00pm to 8.00pm as part of European Prisoners’ Children Week.  The film will be followed by a panel discussion on both days.
