It is estimated that every £1 invested in supporting prisoners’ families could save the taxpayer £11. (PACT 2012)
Families Outside is the only national organisation in Scotland working exclusively on behalf of families affected by imprisonment.
Each year we work with approximately 3,000 family members, helping them with issues such as housing, finance, and emotional support.
Unfortunately this is just the tip of the iceberg…
According to the Scottish Government figures there was an annual average of around 8,200 people in prison in 2019-2020.
That’s 8,200 people who have families outside, families that need support.
Our service provides a very tangible benefit to these families, but it can also have a huge benefit to society as a whole.
By supporting families with their financial issues, for instance, we are reducing financial instability and poverty; by helping them with housing, we reduce their risk of homelessness; by encouraging positive contact with the person in prison, we reduce the risk of reoffending.
